by Tau Phosphoros (Author)
Fragments of the Pleroma offers the first comprehensive introduction to the Apostolic Church of the Pleroma (ACP) and the three sacred traditions that converge within it: classical and modern Gnosticism, the Martinist path of Christian mysticism and theurgy, and the Hermetic initiatic tradition as preserved in the Order of Asiatic Architects.
Written by Tau Phosphoros, Patriarch and founder of the ACP, this volume is designed to serve the serious seeker who stands at the threshold of engagement with the Gnostic tradition - beyond the merely curious, not yet within the formal formation program, and looking for a work that respects both their intelligence and the integrity of the tradition itself.
Part One traces the historical origins of Gnosticism from its pre-Christian roots through the Golden Age of the second century, the suppression of the ancient Gnostic communities, their medieval survivals, and the extraordinary French Gnostic Renaissance of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries that gave birth to the modern Gnostic Church. It then addresses one of the questions most commonly posed to modern Gnostic bodies - Are you Sethian? Valentinian? - explaining why the ACP's synthetic theological character transcends these categories while drawing deeply from both traditions. Subsequent chapters present the ACP's Gnostic theology as a living mythological narrative, examine the seven sacraments and their theurgical significance, and offer a detailed introduction to the Liturgy of the Pleromic Light - the ACP's central liturgical rite, whose alchemical architecture of Nigredo, Albedo, and Rubedo gives the Mass its distinctive Hermetic and operative depth.
Part Two examines the Martinist stream: the origins of the tradition in the theurgical system of Martinès de Pasqually and the contemplative "Way of the Heart" of Louis-Claude de Saint-Martin, the founding of the modern Martinist Order by Papus and Augustin Chaboseau, and the role of the Christian Knights of Saint-Martin as the ACP's appendant body of Martinist initiation, research, and practical theurgy.
Part Three surveys the lineage of Hermetic initiatic orders - from the Order of African Architects and the Asiatic Brethren through the Egyptian Rites of Memphis and Misraïm, the Hermetic Brotherhood of Luxor, and the Oriental Templars - before presenting the Order of Asiatic Architects: its character as an independent para-Masonic body of Hermetic initiation, its seventeen degrees of instruction and initiation organized across six conclaves, and its place as the third element of the ACP's Sacred Triad.
Part Four brings the three streams together in an account of the ACP's integrated formation program - the daily practice of the personal sanctum, the threefold engagement of study, contemplative prayer, and theurgical operation, the rhythm of the liturgical year, and the path from the earliest minor orders to the fullness of Episcopal consecration. The book closes with a direct and honest address to the reader drawn to this path, speaking plainly about what the tradition requires as well as what it offers.
Fragments of the Pleroma will be of interest to members and clergy of Gnostic churches and esoteric orders, students of the Western Mystery Tradition, and scholars of modern Gnosticism, Martinism, and esoteric Freemasonry.
